There’s something so satisfying about a stitch that looks fancy but is secretly really simple, and whipped back stitch is exactly that. It’s one of my favourites for adding just the right amount of texture and polish to a design, especially outlines and lettering.
At its core, it’s just a regular back stitch with a twist. Literally!
Once you’ve stitched your back stitch, you take another length of thread and gently weave it through your existing stitches without piercing the fabric.
The result? A soft, raised, rope-like line that gives your stitching more presence.
It’s one of those techniques I come back to again and again. Whether I’m outlining a shape, stitching smooth curves, or bringing some extra detail to text, it’s such a reliable way to make a design feel just that little bit more special.
Is whipped back stitch one of your go-to stitches, too?
